Abstract: In this paper,the theory of the chemical mass balance(CMB),which is the most widelyused in source analysis of air particulate in urban atmosphere was introduced. We have identified thesources of particulate in both Haigang and Shanguan districts of Qinhuangdao city and quantified thecontribution of different source types to receptor concentrations.We have also investigated the effectof the largest coal dock in China-Qinhuangdao Coal Dock on background dust and the carbon elementin total suspended particulate(TSP).It showed that the major source of TSP in both Haigang andShanhaiguan districts was wind blowing and background dust, then the coal-combustion ash and seasalt.We also know that weather conditions especially wind direction can easily affect the source contributions of TSP.Finally we draw a conclusion that Qinhuangdao Coal Dock is the major source ofthe carbon element in TSP in this area and the levels of both Haigang and Shanhaiguan districts affected bv the Coal Dock are different under different weather conditions.
