Abstract:
By using a system combining Tekmar 3000 purge and trap concentrator with HP 5972 GC/MSD,with reference to the US EPA standard test methods,a quantitative analysis on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in some bottled waters for drinking produced in China was made. The results showed that all of these bottled waters contain a minor amount of VOCs,mostly in the range of 1.0~8.0 μg/L,including halogenated hydrocarbons and BTEX which are carcinogenic and mutagenic chemicals. It was noted that the VOCs in these bottled waters are obviously higher than that in two types of well-known bottled water from France although they are much lower than Chinese national standard of bottled water for drinking. The VOCs in the bottled waters are mainly related to the techniques and their combination to be used to purify the waters, and can be removed by improving these techniques.
