Abstract: Based on analysis of the concepts and features of landscape ecology and entropy,and taking the desertification area in the north of Chengde City for example,the application of landscape dominance index and evenness index in landscape ecology and entropy model of thermodynamics in desertification monitoring and assessment was explored.According to Landsat remote sensing TM statistics on August 31th,2001,together with the local investigation,the desertification level was classified through evaluation of the entropy and vegetation coverage,etc.The result shows that through the entropy of desertification landscape system calculated by the entropy model,the development tendency of the desertification landscape can be judged,and the desertification levels of different desertification landscape be compared as well.Through analysis of the complex index, it can be judged that the desertification is of high level in Xiaoba Township,Fengning County and of middle level in Yudaokou,Weichang County.This conclusion fits well with the reality.
