Abstract:
Based on the “PAS2050 Standards” guidance combined with life cycle assessment methodologies and LandGEM models, the carbon footprint of the whole life cycle of landfill and incineration for household solid waste in Suzhou were calculated. Every possible source of greenhouse gas emissions from household solid waste disposal was listed in detail, and electricity consumption and other energy consumption from individual sources were calculated. They were then converted to CO
2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions by multiplying by greenhouse gas emissions coefficients. It was concluded that greenhouse gas emissions in CO
2-equivalent of one ton of household solid waste in Suzhou throughout the life cycle is 1942.47 kg by landfill and is -180.87 kg by incineration. Calculated with the current solid waste disposal ratio, greenhouse gas emissions in CO
2-equivalent of one ton of solid waste in Suzhou throughout the life cycle is 880.80 kg. The reductions of CO
2 emissions from electricity generation in disposal of solid waste were also taken into account.
